This time at our shan state, cherry flowers are fully blossomed. Snow is falling continuously. The sound of shan drum and musical instruments are spreading everywhere. At night, we can hear toke-hsu songs(kind of Carol Singing) of the youths singing to welcome newyear. They go to every house to sing the songs for the house owner that will bring the good properous for the coming year.
We, shan people believe that the sound of kong mong(shan musical instrument) will bring the good fortune. So the house owner will be very pleased with it when people come to their home for toke-hsu with kong mong. They will treat with shan traditional snacks, sweets , orange and so many things.
When coming to new year day, every cities and townships will celebrate the welcome party of shan new year. Shan new year falls on the first day of the first Tai lunar month.(Lerng Zeng). Lerng means month and Zeng means the beginning. New year day will fall on 10th Dec 07 for this year.
The usual customs for the New Year Day are:
- Observe some religious rites especially in Buddhist monasteries.
- Pay respect to the elders
- Have a meal, a portion from the harvest, with family and friends.
- Visiting friends adorning Tai costumes.
